MICHAEL CUSICK, M.D.

Michael Cusick, M.D. joined Eye Consultants of Pennsylvania in 2010 as a specialist in vitreo-retinal diseases and surgery.

Dr. Cusick completed his undergraduate and medical degrees at Georgetown University in Washington, DC. During his medical training, Dr. Cusick worked as a Howard Hughes Scholar in clinical research at the National Eye Institute (NEI), National Institutes of Health (NIH). He then completed his residency training in Ophthalmology at The Wilmer Eye Institute of the Johns Hopkins Medical Center in Baltimore, Maryland. Dr. Cusick then completed a 2-year medical and surgical vitreo-retinal fellowship at the Duke Eye Center in Durham, North Carolina. During his fellowship, he was awarded the Heed Foundation Award and was selected as the Duke Eye Center Hornaday Fellow for excellence in teaching, ethics, and research. He was certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology in 2009.

During his career, Dr. Cusick has been active in clinical research. His publications and research activities have included: diabetic macular edema and the Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study (ETDRS), macular degeneration and the Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS), retinopathy of prematurity, sickle-cell retinopathy, and retained lens fragments after cataract surgery. He has presented his work at national and international meetings including the annual meeting of the American Society of Retina Specialists (ASRS) and the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO).

Dr. Cusick specializes in vitreo-retinal disorders including diabetic eye disease, macular degeneration, retinal detachment, macular holes, epiretinal membranes (macular puckers), infectious and noninfectious uveitis, and posterior segment trauma. He is experienced with the most current medical treatments including intraocular injections (Avastin, Lucentis, triamcinolone, dexamethasone) and photodynamic therapy (PDT). Dr.. Cusick is also experienced with the most modern surgical techniques including retinal lasers, pneumatic retinopexy, scleral buckles, small gauge vitrectomy, perfluorocarbon liquid, SF6 and C3F8 gases, and silicone oil for complex retinal detachments. Above all, Dr. Cusick is dedicated to bringing the highest level of care to his patients to provide them with the best possible results.

Dr. Cusick sees patients at the Wyomissing, Pottsville, and Pottstown offices. He is currently on staff at the Reading Hospital and Medical Center, the Pennsylvania Eye & Ear Surgery Center and the Pottsville Hospital.
