A native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Elliot B. Werner, M.D., our newest glaucoma specialist, attended undergraduate and medical school at the University of Pennsylvania. He completed his ophthalmology residency at McGill University in Montreal and a fellowship in glaucoma at the University of British Columbia with Dr, Stephen Drance, one of the pioneers in developing glaucoma specialty training.
After completing his training in 1977, Dr. Werner joined the faculty at McGill University and was appointed Director of the Glaucoma Service at the prestigious Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal. In 1982, Dr. Werner joined the faculty at the University of Pennsylvania Department of Ophthalmology, Scheie Eye Institute in Philadelphia. During this time he also served as Chief of Ophthalmology at the Philadelphia Veterans Administration Hospital. In 1988, Dr. Werner joined the faculty at Hahnemann University (now Drexel University College of Medicine). He rose to the rank of full professor and Chief of the Glaucoma Service in the Department of Ophthalmology. He has also been a member of the Wills Eye Hospital Glaucoma Service, Co-Chief of the Glaucoma Center at The Eye Institute of the Pennsylvania College of Optometry, and has served as President of the Section on Ophthalmology for the Philadelphia College of Physicians.
Dr. Werner is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology as well as the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and a member of several national and international societies including the American Glaucoma Society and the International Perimetric (Visual Field) Society. He has received the American Academy of Ophthalmology Honor Award and is a member of AOA, the National Medical Honor Society. He is the author of over fifty original scientific papers as well as a contributing author to numerous textbooks.
He has medical staff privileges at the
Reading Hospital and Medical Center, The Pottsville Hospital and Warne Clinic, Pennsylvania Eye and Ear Surgery Center, Phoenixville Hospital, as well as the Wills Eye Hospital.
